And then there is the question of riches v wealth. I have heard people say that riches don;t make you happy but wealth does. In this case “riches” means all the material things.

I have also heard the two words used the other way around, and it really doesn’t matter which one you use. The bottom line is what does it means to you, and how do you achieve it?

I do believe that whatever material wealth you achieve, however many houses you own or businesses you run, if that is all you have you will still have a very empty life.

To me wealth is very close to abundance, and this is something we can all tap into.There are no real limitations in this world, only those that we perceive.

And ultimately what we all seek, if we are really honest, is love. In my experience the people who are happiest have an abundance of love in their lives. And when they have that they don’t “need” anything else.

And you know what the good news is? You don’t need anyone else.

In case you haven’t seen it, the movie is about a guy who travels the country, 300 days per year, and fires people for a living. He loves every aspect of traveling, especially the parts that require him not to commit to any relationships – not family, not friends and certainly not a love interest. He just doesn’t have time.

Then he meets someone and his life gets turned upside down.

Suddenly his heart is hooked on a love interest. He decides to go to his sister’s wedding, even though the family has written him off. After successfully facilitating a discussion with a very cold-footed groom-to-be who doesn’t think he wants to get married anymore, it became obvious to me that this guy’s major strength was the very thing he’d been trying to avoid. Relationships. Communication. He’s actually very masterful at it.

And so realizing his strength and starting to use it, things begin to change in his life. First, he gets grounded due to some new technology that allows the company to fire people via the internet. (not such a great idea). He strengthens his relationship with family and his love interest and his co-workers. Suddenly, life has meaning. All because external forces forced him to really realize his strengths.

It is this way with many people – not working or living in your strengths. Finding struggle at every turn. Not admitting that maybe the work you’re doing just isn’t for you. Making the changes necessary to “right” your life.

I’ve been making massive changes in my life lately to accommodate some big new ways to help you be more passionate and purposeful in your career. In order to go to the next level, I’ve had to say goodbye to certain things I thought I wanted, and really being honest about my own personal blueprint has helped me to shed the things that were not my strengths and find new ways to get things done.

Whilst I know a few people are on Twitter just for fun, I think a large number are there for a reason, whether that be their business, a charity, the children’s school or just to promote themselves. Whatever the reason, they are there to be seen and to get their message across, and obviously the best way to do this is to grow your list of followers.

If you pay attention to it this is actually quite an easy exercise. With regular focussed attention it is possible to grow your list of followers pretty quickly. And I can tell you this from experience as I did this when I started my Twitter account.

The interesting thing happens when you stop paying attention…… your numbers of followers starts to drop off.

If you keep focussed and taking action you keep on getting more followers, if you leave it alone the numbers fall. Just like when you want something in life really. If you give it your focussed attention AND take action then what you desire will come to you.

So perhaps if what you want isn’t quite here yet it might be worth considering whether you have taken your eye off the ball!

Then on 6 May 1954 Roger Bannister made the world believe that it was possible.

And from that day on, something quite amazing happened.

Over the next 18 months the previously impossible was achieved a staggering 52 further times!

There had been no breakthroughs in training. No breakthroughs in running equipment. No breakthroughs in running surfaces.

The only “breakthrough” was that Roger Bannister had forced the world to change its limiting belief – the limiting belief that the four minute mile was impossible.

He, quite literally, forced them to believe that it was possible. And that simple change in mindset transformed the business of athletics by opening up a Pandora’s box of new possibilities.

And it’s exactly the same in business.

Twenty-four hours a day, 365 days a year banking was “impossible”…. until First Direct made it happen.

A vacuum cleaner that never lost its suction was “impossible”… until James Dyson did the housework one day.

A pocket sized music system was “impossible”…. until Sony created the Walkman.

It was “impossible” for a young businessman working from home to become an internationally recognised and respected superstar… until Richard Branson came along.

And it was impossible to get an instant, hassle-free, 100% refund on an unsatisfactory holiday…until Thomson launched their revolutionary holiday guarantee.

The business world is littered with limiting beliefs – impossible products and services, impossible achievements and impossible guarantees – all of which have made enormous amounts of money for those who had the courage to say “I don’t believe that’s impossible”.

What limiting beliefs are holding you (or your company) back?

They always exist. Always.

Probably the single most important contribution all leaders – including you – can make to their businesses or their life is to start identifying and challenging those limiting beliefs.

Because when you do, the rewards can be enormous. Just as they have been for Branson, Dyson, Sony, First Direct and Thomson.

Down to his last $106, Stallone submitted his screenplay to his agent. A studio offered $20,000 with either Ryan O’Neal or Burt Reynolds playing the lead character. Stallone was excited by the offer but wanted to play the lead himself. He offered to act for free. He was told, “That’s not the way it works in Hollywood.” Stallone turned down the offer though he desperately needed the money.

Then they offered him $80,000 on the condition that he wouldn’t play the lead. He turned them down again.

They told him that Robert Redford was interested, in which case they’d pay him $200,000. He turned them down once more. They upped their offer to $300,000 for his script. He told them that he didn’t want to go through his whole life wondering “what if?”

They offered him $330,000 for his script. He told them that he’d rather not see the movie made if he couldn’t play the lead.

They finally agreed to let him play the lead. He was paid $20,000 for the script plus $340 per week minimum actor’s scale. After expenses, agent fees, and taxes, he netted about $6,000 instead of $330,000.

In 1976 Stallone was nominated for an Academy Award as Best Actor. The movie Rocky won three Oscars: Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Film Editing. The Rocky series has since grossed almost $1 billion, making Sylvester Stallone an international movie star!
